Runns Segelsällskap
Runns Segelsällskap (RSS) is Dalarna's oldest active sports association, founded in 1891, bringing together sailors year-round – from summer sailing on Lake Runn to ice sailing and ice yachts in winter. The club harbour in Hälsinggården near Falun on Lake Runn is the hub, with a clubhouse, three pontoons, harbour crane and sailing school. On the club island Stora Melpad, with a club cabin, sauna, barbecue and piers in all directions, courses, regattas such as the Ornäsregatta and Lindgrens Kanna, pea-soup evenings and family activities take place. Around fifty children and young people learn to sail each summer; adults can book beginner courses. The club provides Optimists among other boats and maintains a varied regatta and community life on the twenty-kilometre-long Runn.
History
Runns Segelsällskap was founded in 1891 and is Dalarna's oldest active sports association. The club brings together people who enjoy sailing all year round – from summer sailing on Runn to ice sailing and ice yachts when the lake freezes. The RSS harbour in Hälsinggården is the heart of activities with sailing courses, training, camps, skippers' meetings, prize ceremonies, theme evenings, annual meetings and parties. The popular club island Stora Melpad lies in Korsnäsfjärden with piers in all directions, a grill, toilet, club cabin with sleeping loft and sauna. The prestigious Lindgrens Kanna competition has been held since 1925; the challenge trophy silver jug was established in 1926 by Nils Lindgren, three years after the club resumed activities following a period of dormancy. Over the years, 61 sailors have had their names engraved on the jug; Sigfrid Stolpe holds the record with six wins between 1928 and 1938. The Ornäsregatta is one of the club's most popular regattas, sailed between the RSS harbour and Ornässtugan. The club also organises championships, match racing and radio-controlled sailing boat competitions. RSS members have competed in Gotland Runt and the club has arranged squadron sailing both on Runn and at sea. Each summer around fifty children and young people learn sailing in the sailing school, and courses are also offered for adults.
