Real Club Náutico Motril
Real Club Náutico Motril is the official sailing and sports club at the port of Motril on Andalusia’s Costa Tropical. At Muelle de Poniente, the dinghy school, race teams and cruiser programme sit directly by the sea. The club offers Optimist and ILCA programmes with club boats for school sessions and own boats for the race team, plus cruiser regattas, berths and a summer sailing school. Juniors and adults find regular training, nautical summer camps and competition from provincial to world level. Highlights are strong youth development, results in Optimist and Snipe, and the traditional open-water swim Travesía a nado del Puerto de Motril.
History
Real Club Náutico Motril is the nautical sports club at Puerto de Motril on the Costa Tropical (Granada). Its dinghy school and race teams have become a reference point in Andalusian sailing; the club ranks 8th in the Federación Andaluza de Vela ranking and is among the region’s top 10. In Optimist the club regularly hosts and wins Almería–Granada provincial championships and fields strong youth squads, especially in female Sub-13 and Sub-16. In Snipe, 2026 brought a historic milestone: for the first time a club crew (Álvaro and Javier Ballesteros López) qualified for the junior world championship; Ángel Ballesteros and Sonia Hidalgo became Andalusian ranking champions and won bronze at the Mixed European Championship in Portugal. The club also runs an established swimming section with a competition team and summer school. The Travesía a nado del Puerto de Motril, organised with the port and the town council, is Spain’s second-oldest open-water swim crossing; the 84th edition was held in 2025. Today activities include Optimist, ILCA and cruiser sailing, nautical summer camps for ages 7–16, and member facilities with pool, gym and club rooms at Muelle de Poniente.
