Real Club Mediterráneo
Real Club Mediterráneo is Spain's oldest yacht club, located at the Port of Málaga near the historic La Farola lighthouse. The multi-sport club combines a strong sailing section with a marina, clubhouse and extensive sports facilities on the Bay of Málaga. The sailing school offers adult as well as children's and youth training in Optimist and Laser, plus racing teams and school programmes with sea baptisms and extracurricular activities. Renowned sailors such as Theresa Zabell and Félix Gancedo shape the club's history; the club also organises national and regional regattas in the Bahía de Málaga.
History
On 20 September 1873 the Club Mediterráneo was founded by young people from Málaga who mainly wanted to practise rowing; the first president was Tomás Heredia Livermore. The club is regarded as Spain's oldest yacht club and has always been linked to the Port of Málaga and the landmark La Farola. In 1892 King Alfonso XIII accepted the honorary presidency and granted the royal title and permission to use the royal colours and crown in the club crest. Rowing and sailing came first; later swimming, sport fishing and further sports were added. Today the club has eight sports sections including sailing, rowing, swimming, triathlon, tennis, padel, fronton and futsal, plus fitness. The record includes two Olympic gold medals (Barcelona and Atlanta by Theresa Zabell in the 470 class), 20 world titles, 34 European titles and 487 Spanish championships. Félix Gancedo became three-time world champion in the Snipe class. The club received the Placa de Oro al Mérito Deportivo in 1982, the COE Olympic plaque in 2010, the City of Málaga Gold Medal in 2017 and the Medalla de Andalucía in 2023. From the Rome 1960 Games onwards the club has regularly been represented in the Spanish Olympic team.
