Real Club Náutico de Palma
The Real Club Náutico de Palma is one of Spain's most prestigious sporting and social clubs, located in the heart of the Bay of Palma on Mallorca. The club offers more than a thousand berths and a clubhouse with gym, swimming pools, library, restaurants and bars on the Paseo Marítimo. With sailing and canoeing schools, competition teams and more than thirty regattas a year – including the Copa del Rey, Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía and PalmaVela – the programme serves juniors and adults. Since the 1948 merger of the Club de Regatas (1891) and Club España, the RCNP has been a leading address in European sailing.
History
The Real Club Náutico de Palma stems from the merger of two traditional clubs in Palma harbour: the Club de Regatas (1891), Mallorca's oldest club, and Club España (1919). Both already organised races with boats and lateen-rigged llaüts; formats such as the circumnavigation of Mallorca survive to this day. In 1948 the RCNP was entered in the sports associations register, published its first statutes and opened its grounds on 5 July 1948. In the following years yachts such as Reyda and Yago II (today Rosendo) belonged to the fleet; in the 1950s the club organised Snipe races among others. It is regarded as the Balearic Islands' „dean club“ because of its link to the Club de Regatas, even though the present institution dates from 1948. The sports programme comprises more than 30 regattas a year. The Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía has been held in spring in the Bay of Palma since 1968 and can gather almost a thousand sailors from over 60 countries in Olympic years. PalmaVela was created in 2005 after the model of Cowes and Key West and became Spain's great yacht festival, from adapted small dinghies to 40-metre maxis. The Copa del Rey Mapfre, founded in 1982 and held each early August, is considered the Mediterranean's premier cruiser regatta and enjoys royal support. The Trofeo Ciutat de Palma has run continuously since 1950 and is the Balearics' oldest sporting event; for about a decade it has been an international Optimist reference with over 300 boats. The sailing and canoeing schools train more than five hundred pupils each year and feed strong teams. Besides sport, the club hosts concerts, exhibitions, talks, gastronomy and its own choir. In 2026 the RCNP celebrated its 78th anniversary after renewing its harbour concession and continues environmental projects such as Mares Circulares and Ocean Ecostructures.
