Real Club Náutico de Vigo
Real Club Náutico de Vigo is a historic multi-sport yacht club on the Ría de Vigo in Galicia, with its main base in Vigo harbour and a second facility in Nigrán (Los Abetos). The club offers a marina, clubhouse, Olympic swimming pool, gym, spa, restaurant and tennis and padel courts, plus an active sailing section with adult courses and youth programmes. Alongside sailing, swimming, artistic swimming, water polo, tennis and padel shape the sports offer with schools and competition teams. Founded in 1906 and granted the Real title by King Alfonso XIII, the club is a central sporting and social landmark of the city of Vigo.
History
Real Club Náutico de Vigo was founded on 17 April 1906 to bring together the city’s water sports; the founders believed a port city like Vigo needed its own yacht club. The first president was Antonio Conde, who offered King Alfonso XIII the honorary presidency; acceptance on 7 August 1906 gave the club its Real title. From 1926 to 1929 the three-masted ship Klosofic (800 tons) served as the clubhouse off the present quay. From 1930, rowing, sailing and swimming were especially prominent; together with the neighbouring Club Marítimo the clubs organised major sporting events. On 4 August 1945 the present social building on the seafront in central Vigo was inaugurated. In 1967 the club opened Galicia’s first heated indoor pool (inaugurated on 23 April by Juan Antonio Samaranch), boosting year-round swimming and water polo. In 1987 the club acquired Los Abetos in Nigrán, about 60,000 m² with views over the Ría de Vigo. Since the 1950s the club has produced many champions and Olympians: from London 1948 to Tokyo 2021, 16 athletes represented the club at nine Olympic Games, including sailors Támara Echegoyen (gold London 2012) and Nicolás Rodríguez (bronze Tokyo 2021). On 17 March 2015 the club received the Placa de Oro al Mérito Deportivo of the Real Orden del Mérito Deportivo (after previously holding the Placa de Plata). Today the club describes itself as the city’s leading nautical sporting and social actor, with sites in Vigo and Nigrán, a marina and numerous sports schools.
