Real Club Náutico de Castellón

Real Club Náutico de Castellón is a traditional Spanish sailing and nautical sports club in the harbour of Castelló de la Plana on the Costa del Azahar. The club is located on the Escollera de Poniente in Puerto de Castellón and operates a marina with berths, a shipyard and a clubhouse. Besides dinghy and cruiser sailing, canoeing, dragon boat, kayak polo, fishing and a multisport school are part of the programme; juniors train among other classes in Optimist. The club organises regattas such as Regata Costa Azahar and Trofeo Magdalena and looks back on a history dating to the early 1930s.

History

Around 1930 a group of young swimmers practised in the port of Castellón, near the breakwater and El Pinar beach, even though bathing and swimming in the port were then forbidden. In 1932 they obtained permission from the port authority to form a club with a fenced area and a first wooden hut; thus Club Náutico de Castellón was officially founded with modest early sporting events. About thirty years later the old wooden shed was replaced by a more modern building to accommodate further sports. From 2000 the present social building was constructed; after completion it was inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I and the club took the name Real Club Náutico de Castellón. Today the offer includes, besides the historic swimming, dinghy and cruiser sailing, canoeing, kayak polo, dragon boat, a nautical sports school, sea baptisms and social events. The club aims to keep growing and to introduce new disciplines so that as many people as possible can discover the nautical world. After roughly 93 years of activity, promoting nautical sports remains the core purpose.
