Marinekameradschaft Prinz Eugen Bruck/Mur
Marinekameradschaft Prinz Eugen in Bruck an der Mur is a family-friendly leisure club and boat-licence school on the reservoir at Übelstein. The club facilities include a harbour with a renovated pier, two small lighthouses and the cosy clubhouse Luise on the harbour grounds. At weekends and on public holidays members may use boats up to ten metres on the Mur; there are no permanent berths, so motorboats and inflatable boats must be taken home in the evening. Monthly board evenings on the first Friday, seasonal raft trips and courses for the Austrian inland skipper certificate and coastal licence FB1 shape the programme. Since its founding in the 1970s and the water-rights permit of 1975, the club combines watersports with naval tradition and also attracts many young people.
History
Marinekameradschaft Prinz Eugen, Bruck/Mur grew out of a split by young water- and rowing-enthusiastic members of MK Wiking. After permission from the tradition association Prinz Eugen in Ried, the first application was filed with the Styrian provincial government on 14 October 1971. On 24 March 1975 Steweag granted the usage permit; on 24 April 1975 the Styrian government issued the water-rights permit to build a landing stage near the Pernegg power plant. Since 1975 the Marinekameradschaft has thus been authorised to use the Mur as a sports facility on the reservoir created by the Pernegg dam (1925–1927). Within the Austrian Naval Association the club long held an outsider role because its founders preferred watersports and boat handling to veteran culture and were sometimes labelled „inflatable-boat sailors“. A new ÖMV guideline under Colonel DI Skrivanek stressed love of seafaring, seamanship and comradeship rather than war veteran status. In 1999 Karl Ferst became chairman until the annual meeting in February 2011; Josef Standler then took over, later Adolf Dreisger. The harbour in Übelstein with clubhouse, pier and lighthouses plus the own skipper school for inland and coastal licences still define the club today.
