Club Patí Vela Barcelona
Club Patí Vela Barcelona (C.P.V.B., legally Club Patí Català de Vela Barcelona) is a non-profit sports club on the beachfront at Moll de la Marina in Barcelona. Its focus is promoting the traditional Catalan Patí de Vela as well as courses and rental of paddle surf, surfing, windsurfer and rowing in the Catalan llagut. Facilities include changing rooms with showers and lockers, boat storage and launching for patins, sail storage, a shipyard for repair and restoration, and indoor/outdoor chill-out areas. Training and programmes cover all ages: senior, women, junior and teenager teams, extracurricular Patí Junior programmes, a summer camp for ages 8 to 16, and social projects with Goofys. The club is closely linked to the Barceloneta and Sant Martí neighbourhoods and upholds Catalan maritime tradition, including its own shipyard for building and repairing the Patí Català.
History
Club Patí Vela Barcelona is a non-profit sports organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the popular character of Barcelona’s genuine Patí a Vela. With a special link to Barceloneta and Sant Martí, it organises social integration activities based on maritime heritage and sport. As a non-profit it offers its facilities and activities to the city’s associative network and social projects, including summer water activities with Goofys for children after surgery, with reduced mobility, or with autism and Down syndrome. The boat class itself dates back to the early 20th century on Badalona’s beaches, first as a rudimentary rowing craft and later with a sail. In 1942 the Catalan Mongé brothers shaped the Patí de Vela into the known singlehanded one-design without rudder or centreboard, steered by weight shift and sheet. In its own shipyard the club continues wooden boatbuilding tradition with modern technology and offers construction, repair and full restoration of Patí de Vela boats.
