Associació Patí Català Calafell
Associació Patí Català Calafell is a non-profit sailing and maritime heritage association on the Platja de Calafell in the province of Tarragona. The club promotes traditional Catalan sailing with the Patí a vela and lateen sail (vela llatina) and runs its headquarters and ecomuseum in the former distillery on Carretera del Sanatori. Facilities include moorings at the Moll de les Llatines in Port Segur de Calafell, a slipway at Trajo de l'Espineta and a fleet of restored wooden boats. The programme features Trobades de Vela Llatina, Patí regattas, public sailing trips, concerts on board the Francisca and photography contests. Since its founding in 2010 the association has worked to revive Calafell's maritime heritage and return historic boats to the sea.
History
Associació del Patí Català de Calafell was founded in early 2010; the statutes are dated 30 January 2010, and in May 2010 the local press reported on the new association to promote and revive traditional sailing. According to the statutes its purpose is to unite people with an affinity for the Patí a vela, foster navigation and conserve that craft and other traditional Catalan boats, without profit motive. In August 2010 the lateen sail boat Pal i Fusa was christened and launched – the first such launching on Platja de Calafell this century after more than half a century. From 2010/2011 further restorations followed: Julieta, Helena, Lola (formerly Rocamar), Montserrat and the lifeboat Pàtria (purchased in 2010 for a symbolic euro). Carlos Barral, sister boat of the historic Capitán Argüello of the Barral family, was restored from 2011 and funded by crowdfunding. Peregrina joined in 2016, Galatzó in 2018 and Pauot in 2019. In parallel the Ecomuseum Mar Mític · Mar Lúdic was created in the Distillery with exhibitions on Calafell's seafaring history. Francisca, a replica of the historic barca, won the 2019 participatory budget at the end of 2018; construction was awarded in late 2020 to Astilleros Cataluña in Badalona, keel laying in October 2021, deck from May 2022. Today the association has 18 recovered boats, nine of which sail, organises the annual Trobada de Vela Llatina and cultural formats such as La Francisca en concert.
