Potsdamer Seesport Club e. V.

Potsdamer Seesportclub e.V. on Lake Tiefen See in Babelsberg Park has upheld seafaring and maritime traditions in Potsdam for over 70 years. Around 95 members aged 8 to 80 train weekly in the eight water-sports disciplines of swimming, rowing, sailing, running, knotting, line throwing and rope climbing. The club sails Optimist, Ixylon, 420er and the ZK10 marine cutter; the boating section also offers guest berths between Humboldt Bridge and Potsdam lido. Founded in 1991 as successor to the Marineklub Potsdam, the club ranks among Germany's most successful clubs in cutter sailing and cutter rowing. Children and young people are supported in the Seesportkids section; in summer, maritime training takes place on club grounds on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

History

The roots of Potsdamer Seesportclub date back to the founding of the Gesellschaft für Sport und Technik (GST) on 7 August 1952. In January 1953 the GST central board decided to build boathouses in Magdeburg, Schwerin, Berlin and Potsdam for water sports. After site assessments at Lake Tiefen See and Babelsberg Park, approval for Babelsberg Park was granted on 12 June 1953; construction began in December 1953. On 4 November 1954 the Seesport training house was handed over to groups from Potsdam-Stadt totalling 140 members. In 1956 it was renamed Marineklub Potsdam; since 1962 the club has used cutter ZK 10 "Sanssouci". The Potsdam district was the best district in water sports from 1962 to 1974, and in 1967 the first GDR championship for young sailors was held at the Marineklub. After renaming to the district maritime training centre (1969) and back to Marineklub Potsdam (1989), Potsdamer Seesportclub e.V. was founded in February 1991 as its successor. The boating section was established in 1996, and in 1997 the jetty was rebuilt and ownership transferred to the Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten with a requirement to maintain water sports for at least 20 years. The first Potsdam Autumn Cup took place in autumn 2002; German championships in the water-sports multi-event were held in Potsdam in 2005 and 2017. After years of negotiations the club had to vacate its building in 2019 and move to temporary containers; in 2021 Detlef von Jagow was appointed honorary chairman after more than 20 years on the board. Today the PSSC combines over 70 years of water-sports tradition in Potsdam with active club life on Lake Tiefen See.
