Segel- und Yachtclub Steiermark
The Segel- und Yachtclub Steiermark (SYCS) is a non-profit sailing and motorboat club based in Graz-Andritz with a training area at Lake Waldschachersee near Segelschule Konzett. The club runs a clubhouse with lounge, kitchen, office and a large training room as well as a dinghy base with club-owned boats including Atlanta Kolibri and Optimist. Training from inland to offshore (inland sailing qualification, coastal licence, FB1 to FB4), skipper training, GMDSS/SRC and first-aid courses shape the programme alongside annual youth sailing weeks and the Adria Cup. Founded in 1996, the club stands for camaraderie, fairness and introducing young people to sailing.
History
The Segel- und Yachtclub Steiermark grew out of informal gatherings of a small group of sailors and motorboaters who met in changing inns and wanted a permanent meeting place. On 30 July 1996 a founding committee was formed and the statutes drafted; after official approval the club began operations on 2 August 1996. The first club venue was the cultural hall of the municipality of Stattegg on the northern edge of Graz, available two evenings a month; in parallel Lake Waldschachersee became the second pillar as a sailing area. Founding proposers included Werner Gauster, DI Harald Hütter, Erich Alfred Pernold, DI Heinz Temmer and Dr Helmut Waidacher; after the first ordinary election Erich Alfred Pernold became chairman. 1997 focused on training: at Lake Waldschacher the sailing area was prepared with Segelschule Ignaz Krauss, and the first offshore course began with simple means. At the end of 2004 the club moved into a new clubhouse with lounge, kitchen, office, large training room and ancillary rooms. Today SYCS is an accredited training centre of the association of examination organisations, organises the Adria Cup on the Croatian coast and runs annual youth sailing weeks at Lake Waldschachersee.
