Salzburger Yachtclub
The Salzburger Yachtclub (SYC) is a long-established sailing club on Lake Wallersee in the Salzburg Flachgau region, with facilities in Neumarkt and Zell am Wallersee. The harbour in Neumarkt offers around 60 water berths, shore storage and a crane with a lifting capacity of up to 3.2 tonnes; Zell is home to the clubhouse, a boatshed with workshop and a jetty. The programme includes weekly youth training from May to September, sailing training weeks, numerous club regattas and club-owned training boats in the Optimist and Laser classes. Since its founding in 1946 and the construction of the clubhouse in Zell in 1955, the SYC has become a fixture of the regional sailing scene and celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2026.
History
The SYC’s home waters are Lake Wallersee, about 20 kilometres northeast of Salzburg in the Alpine foothills. The Salzburger Yachtclub was founded as an independent association on 22 March 1946. After years with provisional facilities, a clubhouse was built in Zell am Wallersee in 1955 near the Zell am Wallersee railway stop; boats – then exclusively dinghies – were mostly transported by train. As larger boats and small cruisers became popular, the municipality of Neumarkt built a yacht harbour in the eastern bay with around 60 water berths. In 1972 the SYC signed a use agreement and established its second site there. In the early decades members raced successfully in classes including Korsar, Flying Dutchman, Finn-Dinghy, Tornado, Optimist, 420er and Laser, with results such as European silver in Korsar, world gold and European silver in Surfer, national titles in several classes and youth championships. Regattas were long run from the clubhouse tower in Zell, with start and finish lines sighted via a wooden triangle on the front canopy. In 2026 the club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a star race, boat christenings and a festival programme. The SYC Wallersee Cup donated by Honorary Commodore Dr Christoph Koller is intended to carry the success story forward.
