History

The Seglervereinigung Merching (SVM) was founded on 26 November 1976 by 87 members and has been practising sailing on Lake Mandicho ever since. The club, based in Merching in the district of Aichach-Friedberg, is registered as a non-profit association with the Augsburg Local Court under VR10209 and is organised within the Bavarian Sports Association, the German Sailing Association and the Bavarian Sailing Association. The SVM's sailing area is Lake Mandicho, which on older maps is still labelled as Lech impoundment stage 23. As part of the Lech restoration between Landsberg and Augsburg, Lech impoundment stage 23 was built from 1975 to 1978 on Merching's land as a bed-supporting hydroelectric facility with a new river-and-lake landscape. Since 2003, the 1.6 square kilometre body of water has officially borne the name Mandichosee. The SVM club grounds are located on its south-eastern shore. After the ad hoc relocation of the clubs in October 2016 to make way for the construction of a fish pass at the previous site, the SVM uses new grounds with land berths for club and member boats. The regatta office, changing rooms and sanitary facilities are housed in containers; another container serves as a training and meeting room for theory courses, the winter programme, board meetings, race briefings and prize-giving ceremonies in bad weather. Storage containers hold the sails and equipment of the club boats. Two floating jetties – southern and eastern jetty systems – and a concrete slipway form part of the infrastructure. The old club grounds on the eastern shore of Lake Mandicho no longer exist and are used for the fish pass. Today the new grounds are shared by the Seglervereinigung Merching with Königsbrunn Sailing Club, the MBB sailing sports group and Augsburg Surf Club. The club's purpose is to promote sailing through organising and participating in sailing regattas, training its members and fostering youth development.
