Seglerverein Harlebucht e.V. Bensersiel
Seglerverein Harlebucht e.V. Bensersiel is one of the largest and most active sailing clubs on the North Sea coast. Its home harbour in Esens-Bensersiel lies in the middle of the East Frisian Wadden Sea, sheltered by the offshore island chain, and offers a modern pontoon system with 190 sheltered berths for boats up to 11 metres in length. The youth group has Optimists and Pirates available and practises on the water in summer and theory in winter; the club also hosts the annual Rumfass Regatta between Bensersiel and Langeoog under DSV Yardstick. For more than 50 years since its founding, members have combined cruising in the Wadden Sea and beyond with racing and involvement in the East Frisia Regatta Committee.
History
Seglerverein Harlebucht e.V. Bensersiel has existed for more than 50 years and ranks among the largest and most active sailing clubs on the North Sea coast. The home harbour in Esens-Bensersiel lies in the East Frisian Wadden Sea, sheltered by the East Frisian islands; proximity to Langeoog shapes the sailing area. Since its founding the club has practised sailing in harmony with nature. Some years ago the SVH, together with friendly clubs, founded the East Frisia Regatta Committee (RAO) to create fair racing conditions along the coast. The annual Rumfass Regatta is sailed in the Wadden Sea between Bensersiel and Langeoog under DSV Yardstick; on Sunday the class winners race Optimist dinghies for the rum barrel. Members undertake longer cruises; the club burgee has been seen in the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Poland, the Baltic states and Russia. Reports document among other things the 2018 England cruise by Uwe and Helga Treger and the 2019 Baltic cruise by Sven-Olaf Teichgräber. In early January 2019 long-standing board member Hinni Uden was honoured. The modern marina offers 190 sheltered berths for boats up to 11 metres; about 30 percent of boats in the club are motorboats. Since 20 January 2001 the club has been networked via the Youth Sailing Working Group in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea (A-Watt) with other East Frisian island and coastal clubs.
