Segler-Verein Braunschweig e.V.
Segler-Verein Braunschweig e.V. (SVBS) is a non-profit water sports club on the northern shore of Braunschweig's Südsee with a focus on sailing and is one of the largest training clubs in Lower Saxony. The club grounds at Schrotweg 113 feature three year-round jetties, wet and dry berths, a clubhouse with panoramic terrace, barbecue area and beach zone, plus lakeside catering. The programme covers youth sailing, recreational and regatta sailing, inclusive sailing, dragon boat and stand-up paddling, as well as courses from inland and coastal powerboat licences through to coastal skipper certificates and radio qualifications. Regular youth training in Optimist, ILCA, 420 and Vaurien, four home regattas per year including the Löwencup, and partnerships with schools and the Evangelische Stiftung Neuerkerode shape club life. Since its founding in 1968, SVBS has become a fixture on the Südsee and has repeatedly been named Club of the Year.
History
Segler-Verein Braunschweig e.V. was founded on 28 February 1968 at the Haus zur Hanse by seven founding members and joined the city and state sports federations as well as the DSV. By the end of 1968 the club had 135 members, including 18 juniors. In 1970 SVBS hosted the first national Vaurien selection for World Championship participation. The 1970s saw strong growth: annual sea-sailing gatherings began in 1973, 77 DSV sailing certificates were issued in 1975, and in 1976 membership peaked at 358 (105 juniors). In 1977 the AGM decided to build the water sports centre; the foundation stone was laid in 1978 by Mayor Gerhard Glogowski. After volunteer construction work the centre was officially opened on 16 October 1982 with 34 wet and 77 dry berths. Later decades were marked by offshore voyages, regatta success and cruising, including rounding Cape Horn in 1990 and numerous junior titles. SVBS was named Club of the Year in 2013 and again in 2021. The dragon boat section Südseedrachen was founded in 2014. In 2018 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary and built a new training jetty and youth annex. Since 2019 SVBS has cooperated with Evangelische Stiftung Neuerkerode on inclusive sailing; in 2020 it joined Special Olympics Niedersachsen. In January 2021 the club had 411 members.
