Segel-Verein Wedel-Schulau e.V.
Traditional sailing club in Wedel-Schulau on the Elbe with a strong youth programme, adult sailing groups, club boats, boat storage, regattas and comprehensive sailing training including sport boat licence courses.
History
Youth training at Segel-Verein Wedel-Schulau e.V. has a long tradition. As early as 1946 there was a youth chairman representing the interests of the club's young members. Nine years later the first youth cutter flew a Schulau burgee on the Elbe. In 1970 the then board decided to train children in Optimists and invested not only in four club Optimists but also in the future of the club. Much time has passed since then and the youth fleet today comprises about 25 Optimists (five for regatta training), nine Teeny dinghies, two RS Fevas, ten Pirats, one youth cruising cutter and one J/24, plus numerous motorboats for instructors. The youth group comprises about 120 children, teenagers and juniors divided into nine groups by boat class, age and experience. Training is led by about 20 volunteer instructors, most of whom started sailing with us themselves. This training system has proved successful, giving youngsters not only solid sailing skills but also responsibility. The heart of the club grounds is the club centre with catering, two training rooms, board room, office and club room, completed in 2020. More than 11,000 square metres of club land are maintained by the administration committee, including about 100 outdoor berths and about 60 indoor winter storage places.
