History

On Sunday, 7 December 1902, fifteen men founded Segler-Verein Trave in the old ferry house at the Herrenfähre. The founders were craftsmen; the first clubhouse was that ferry house. In 1904 lightning burned the home down; in 1905 a new building followed further east. In 1911 an SVT branch was founded in Neustadt, today's NSV. In 1912 SVT was among the first members of the German Sailing Federation (Deutscher Segler-Bund). In 1918 the boathouse had to be demolished after the leased land was sold; 1921 brought a fresh start with a boat storage hall (84 members, 26 boats). In 1922 the club moved to the west side of Travemünder Landstraße with slipway and pier built by members; since the 1920s there has been a base in Travemünde on the Priwall. In 1931 SVT and Segler-Verein Herrenwyk launched the Baltic race, still held today as the joint Trave clubs regatta. After 1945 yachts were seized; sailing resumed in 1949 (38 yachts, 15 dinghies). On 7 April 1950 fire destroyed the mess, boat hall and almost the entire fleet (51 boats, only three survived). In 1951/52 new facilities were built on the east side; membership grew to 280. In 1956 the club received the SVT pier in Travemünde and the inner sides of the Kaiserbrücke. In 1962/63 the new mess was built and inaugurated. In 1966 members built a harbour with 120 berths and oak quay walls. Later years expanded slipway, well, crane operations, hall extension, parking and shore protection. In 1977 SVT celebrated 75 years with a new flagpole. In 1983 membership exceeded 300; Bernhard Krüger and Olaf Dammast took first and second place at the German Optimist championship. In 1987 standardised transport cradles were introduced; in 1989 the club built its own boat crane; in 1991 the floating pontoon was renewed. In 1992 the traditional 24-hour sail became the Seemeilenpokal. From 1994 SVT repeatedly received the Blue Flag for environmental efforts; from 1995 it repeatedly won the Hansekogge of the Schleswig-Holstein sailing association. Since 1995/97 Wednesday sailing has been a central club event. In 1998 construction of the Herrentunnel beside the mess began. In 2001 the Segler-Verein Trave Fördergesellschaft mbH was founded. In 2002 SVT celebrated its centenary with a jubilee regatta, harbour festival and foundation festival in Lübeck's Music and Congress Hall before more than 600 guests; in 2003 followed the Federal President's sports plaque. In 2007/08 the hall roof and gate were renewed or repaired after tornado damage. In 2009 220 metres of shore were restored with oak. In 2011 the Optimist slipway was renewed; in 2013 a dedicated dinghy activity area was created. Today the harbour sits seaside at the Herrentunnel, holds more than one hundred boats and prepares for the 125th anniversary in 2027.
