History

The sailing association was founded on Christmas Eve 1952 and belonged as a sailing section to various company sports clubs in Werder (Havel). In 1953 the founders started with two dinghies in a converted garage on Adolf-Damaschke-Straße; in 1955 they moved with four dinghies onto the island to Fischerstraße. Five years after founding the section had 46 members and 16 seaworthy boats. After an eviction in 1960 and a complaint letter by Karl Czeplak to the GDR Council of Ministers, funds for a new boat house became available; today's grounds on a former dump site were developed, and the boat house was completed in 1963. From 1967 to 1971 an annex with meeting room and sanitary facilities was built; the slipway and berths were expanded. In the 1970s cruising was strong, in 1980 the 20th Preis der Stadt Werder was held, and in 1983 Jens Uwe Weggässer took 3rd place at the GDR championships in the OK class. Youth work with Optimists, Cadets, OK dinghies and Pirates was expanded; in 1983/84 motorboats and a youth boat shed were added. After reunification the independent club Seglervereinigung Einheit Werder 1952 e.V. was founded in 1990; from 1995 to 1998 the clubhouse was modernised. In 2000 Susan Kagel competed with a Europe at the world championships in Bahia. In 2009 the youth centre was inaugurated; the club continues regatta and youth traditions on the Havel.
