Sunds Sejlklub
Sunds Sejlklub is an active local sailing club on Lake Sunds near Herning in Denmark with over one hundred members across several training groups. The club combines sailing, community and practical boat handling for beginners and experienced sailors, focusing on safety, learning and good experiences on the water. Facilities include a clubhouse on Vester Søvej, pontoons, a dinghy park, slipway and club boats including Optimist and Laser. The programme covers junior and senior training, SUP and windsurfing, regattas such as Spar Nord Cup and Sensommer Cup, and joint cruising trips. Founded on 9 September 1975, the club is a member of Dansk Sejlunion and Dansk Idræts-Forbund and offers an inclusive programme for all ages.
History
Sunds Sejlklub was founded on 9 September 1975 at the inaugural general meeting in Herning Central Library with 20 participants, after a friendship race with 28 boats in three classes on 3 August 1975. The idea came from Arne Hollensen and other dinghy sailors; the existing Sunds Sejl- og Motorbådsklub then had only motorboats. The first board elected Ivan Kjeldsen as chair. In 1976 followed the first bylaws, the first flag-raising at Søgaarden and an application for club land to Herning Municipality. In 1977 the first stage of a new pier was inaugurated; in November a storm destroyed half of the boathouse roof. Later in the 1970s came club newsletters, membership of Samvirkende Idrætsklubber i Herning and a free wooden building of about 40 m². From 1980 sponsor Optimists arrived; in 1982 membership of Dansk Sejlunion was pursued, in 1983 the first safety boat was bought and in 1984 the first surfboard. After planning and construction decisions the new clubhouse was inaugurated on 7 May 1988. In 1990 Mini 12 Metre boats arrived; from 1991 to 1994 the club organised major windsurfing events including nationals, the 1992 Europeans and the 1994 Worlds in Rønbjerg. An extension followed in 1995, a website in 1997 as the sixth Danish sailing club online, Wayfarer dinghies in 1998 and by 1999 a car park and new pier sections. The surf section grew strongly in the 1980s and peaked at about 130 surfers in 1990; today about 20 surfers and kiters remain. The club now offers dinghy, junior, senior, watersports and SUP/surf activities on Lake Sunds.
