History

Storsjöns Segelsällskap was founded in 1948 and has since promoted sailing, boating and community in Östersund and Jämtland. Youth work grew strongly in the early 1970s; 1971–1973 were marked by sailing camps, 70-dinghy sailing and points racing. In 1973 the club celebrated its 25th anniversary with 133 members and about 30 registered boats. In 1979 activity was organised into keelboat, dinghy and boardsailing sections; membership stood at 231 with 60 keelboats, 33 boardsailors and 9 dinghies. In 1983 the club took over the new yard by the locomotive sheds; in 1984 a permanent crane was installed at Storsjöstråket. In 1986 the first Swedish sailing championship on Storsjön was held – Mirror nationals. At the 40th anniversary in 1988 the club had 395 members and 94 keelboats. In 1996 it hosted the Mirror Europeans with over 50 boats from four countries. By the 50th anniversary in 1998 the club was established with harbour, yard and stable finances. Later Storsjöns Segelsällskap also organised the Mirror World Championship 2005 in Östersund. Today the club combines tradition and renewal with sailing school, training, racing and social boating on Storsjön.
