Stockholms Segelsällskap
Stockholms Segelsällskap (SSS) is one of Stockholm's oldest sailing clubs, founded in 1895. The club operates several sites on Lake Mälaren, including the central Västerbrohamnen in Stockholm as well as Rastaholm, Bergvik and Tranebergshamnen. Members use pontoons, boatyards, clubhouses, a sauna, guest berths and harbour facilities with showers, toilets and environmental stations. The programme includes sailing camps for children and youth, weekly training in Optimist and ILCA, plus regattas, cruising squadrons and harbour operations. A junior section has existed since 1944; the long tradition and the club's own island Rastaholm still shape club life today.
History
Stockholms Segelsällskap was founded in 1895 as Grönviks Segelsällskap with about twenty people and a handful of boats. A few years later the club grew substantially and changed its name to Stockholms Segelsällskap. In 1901 SSS already had 279 members with only 29 registered squadron boats; today about 1,125 boats are registered. Birger Gustafsson (1874–1969) shaped the club as chairman from 1899 to 1955 with brief interruptions – 52 years in total. Västerbrohamnen on Riddarfjärden was acquired in 1910 as the first proper harbour and today hosts about 165 members' boats. Bergvik harbour and yard were leased from the City of Stockholm in 1917; the facility handles 250–300 boats up to 20 tonnes, about 120 berths and youth training. In 1932 the clubhouse on Rastaholme, an island on Björkfjärden given by Birger Gustafsson and Ingvar Rosenlund, was inaugurated. Rastaholm has hosted autumn races, Rastaholm regattas, cup races, Mälar regattas and national championships; mid-September autumn races remain the traditional end of the Mälaren season. In 1944 a junior section was created with summer camps; today just over 120 children and youths take part each summer, thousands over the years in Optimist, Laser, Trissjolle and Tvåkrona. Until 1969 SSS gradually bought land around Rastaholm; today there is a large yard for about 400 boats and a harbour for about 200 boats plus guest berths. In 1983 Tranebergshamnen was added – the second-largest summer harbour with over 160 berths. Since spring 1998 a passenger boat runs daily from Rastaholm to Birka. In 2010–2012 youth activities expanded with weekly training at Västerbrohamnen; the sailing section now covers Optimist, Laser, C55 and Tvåkrona as well as adult sailing in Laser and C55. For the centenary in 1995 a major celebration was held in the Rastaholm clubhouse. Today SSS has around 1,600 members, four harbours, two yards and two guest harbours.
