Studentische Segelvereinigung Wuppertal e.V.
The Studentische Segelvereinigung Wuppertal e.V. is a sailing club founded in 1992 by students of the University of Wuppertal, aiming to teach young people sailing in a relaxed atmosphere and keep the hobby affordable. The club owns the dinghy Ilva, a Conger class boat, at the Bever Dam reservoir and a sailing yacht in the Netherlands on the Heeger Meer, and additionally charters boats for training and sea trips. Members meet every Tuesday from 7 p.m. at the Uni Kneipe; the programme includes holiday cruises, training voyages and comprehensive licence courses. For many years the club has provided volunteer training for inland and coastal pleasure craft licences as well as advanced certificates such as SKS, SSS and SHS, and was recognised by the German Sailing Federation in 2023 and 2024 for its training work.
History
The Studentische Segelvereinigung Wuppertal e.V. was founded in 1992 by students of the University of Wuppertal. Its goal has always been to teach young people sailing in a relaxed atmosphere and to make this often expensive hobby affordable and accessible. Shortly after founding, the SSVW began training for pleasure craft licences; this offer was steadily expanded and developed to a consistently high standard. For more than ten years, coastal yachtmaster training has also been part of the programme; in recent years, radio certificates and the specialised qualification for distress signalling devices were added. Since 2015 the club dinghy Ilva, a Conger, has been based at the Bever Dam reservoir; in the Netherlands the club also maintains a sailing yacht for members and training. Additional boats are chartered for training and sea trips. At the 2023 Sailing Day in Bremen, the German Sailing Federation awarded the SSVW for its diverse and successful training; 39 of 391 training clubs received the award. In 2024 at Rostock-Warnemünde the club received the award for the second year running; 32 of 442 training clubs were honoured. Members include students, former students and sailors who have moved to the area. Regular club meetings take place on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. at the Uni Kneipe on Gaußstraße 20 in Wuppertal. In January 2024 the club visited Boot 2024 in Düsseldorf with SBF trainees, focusing among other things on maintenance of the club fleet.
