Segelsällskapet Vega
Segelsällskapet Vega is a sailing boat club founded in 1915 in Stockholm, with its home harbour in Ekhagen on Lilla Värtan and a winter yard in Tegelhagen. The modern harbour at Ekhagsvägen 14 provides berths for 77 sailing boats on Y-booms as well as its own mast crane, a guard hut and a sauna raft for members with a boat place. Facilities also include the shared yard in Tegelhagen and a club island on Stora Byholmen east of Grinda in the Stockholm archipelago. The club has about 300 members and a fleet of roughly 80 sailing boats, and each year organises three internal races plus traditional celebrations such as Midsummer. A hallmark is members’ joint practical work on haul-outs, launchings, repairs and building projects, which keeps costs down and strengthens club cohesion.
History
Segelsällskapet Vega is a boat club with its origins in Brunnsviken opposite Hagaparken. Already during the Brunnsvik era the club had an outer harbour for sailing boats in Lilla Värtan outside the entrance to Brunnsviken. The harbour with space for 60 sailing boats still exists in Ekhagen below Lappkärrsberget. Segelsällskapet Vega was founded in 1915 and today has its home harbour in Ekhagen, the yard in Tegelhagen and a club island slightly east of Grinda in the Stockholm archipelago. The club island lies in the middle archipelago and forms the southern tip of Stora Byholmen near Karklöfaret; in summer it is the members’ meeting place. Besides shared care of harbours and yard, the club organises three internal races each year and a traditional Midsummer celebration. Further activities include a communal lunch at the spring fitting-out and peas and punch in the autumn. The club committee has grown in importance and arranges many of these events, with song and music as a continuous thread. A cornerstone of club life is members’ joint practical work on boat haul-out, launching, repairs and various building projects. The aim is both to keep costs down and to build cohesion through working together. The modern harbour in Ekhagen has berths for 77 sailing boats on Y-booms, with its own mast crane and a guard hut. A sauna raft has been added for members with a boat place in Ekhagen. The Tegelhagen yard in Sollentuna is shared by five boat clubs and managed through Sollentuna Båtsportunion (SoBu). SS Vega is affiliated to Svenska Båtunionen and admits sailing boats only. The club has 300 members and a fleet of about 80 sailing boats.
