Société des Régates de Douarnenez
Société des Régates de Douarnenez is a traditional sailing club on Douarnenez Bay in Brittany, founded in 1883 to encourage navigation and advance the nautical arts. The clubhouse is at the Tréboul marina in the Maison du Nautisme on Quai de l'Yser. The club runs several sections: a strong Dragon fleet of 15 boats, a dinghy school with Optimist, ILCA and Europe, plus classic yacht and boardsports poles (kiteboard, wingfoil, windsurfing). Saturday training covers children, juniors and adults; the club hosts national and international regattas and is firmly competition-oriented. For over 140 years the SRD has shaped sailing life in Douarnenez with rigor on the water and hospitality ashore.
History
Société des Régates de Douarnenez was founded on 19 April 1883. The statutes were filed with the prefecture the next day; authorization followed on 7 May. Article 1 states the association’s purpose: to encourage navigation and contribute to the progress of the nautical arts. Succeeding the earlier regatta committee, it was chaired for three years by Frédéric Marie Frostin, Maritime Registration Commissioner for the Douarnenez district. In 1886 the Société was recognized by the Yacht Club de France, received a grant of 150 francs and adopted a burgee inspired by the YCF. Alexandre Rideau succeeded Frostin as president. Today the club is active in Dragon, dinghy sailing, classics and boardsports, organizes major events such as the Dragon Gold Cup and Douarnenez Classique, and keeps its clubhouse at Maison du Nautisme in Tréboul marina. The Dragon fleet currently numbers 15 units, two available to members; since 2015 the club owns a Dragon for discovery sailing. Douarnenez Bay (about 16 × 20 km) offers sheltered racing waters within the Iroise Marine Natural Park.
