Seglergemeinschaft Kassel e.V.
Seglergemeinschaft Kassel e.V. was founded in 1972 and is a long-established sailing club focused on training juniors and adults in Kassel and northern Hesse. At the Bugasee lake the club operates a clubhouse with a boat hall, at Lake Edersee it maintains its own marina, and the 39-foot yacht Inspiration is based on the Baltic Sea near Kiel. More than 30 club-owned boats – from Optimists to training dinghies, 420s and Laser boats – are available to members, along with SUP and surfboards. Regular DSV licence courses, summer holiday sailing courses for children, regatta sailing and club cruises shape a varied programme. Around 180 members sustain club life at monthly club evenings and shared celebrations.
History
On 23 November 1972, 16 sailors from Kassel who had been active in a local group of the German offshore sports association Hansa (DHH) since 1956 founded Seglergemeinschaft Kassel. First chairman Alfred Steinmetz stated the aim of opening sailing to a broad public and promoting youth work and training in particular. By autumn 1973 the SGK already had 119 members and acquired a Schwertzugvogel named Ephesus plus six Optimist dinghies. The first club pontoon at Lake Edersee was commissioned in spring 1974. In the 1970s the club grew to as many as 400 members, with 80 to 100 sailors taking licence training each year. After resignations and a split, the club stabilised under a new board and undertook flotilla cruises to the Caribbean, the Baltic and Turkish waters. In 1993 members completed the first transatlantic cruise. In 1995 Seglergemeinschaft Kassel e.V. became co-owner of the building at Bugasee lake, sharing it with Windsurfverein Nordhessen e.V. Training for the youngest members takes place with a large Optimist fleet at Bugasee; the Edersee fleet was expanded. In 1997 the SGK celebrated its 25th anniversary with a squadron trip to Västeras in Sweden. In 1999 an Atlantic cruise of nearly 13,000 nautical miles followed, and the SGK won the Hessen Cup of the Baltic regatta for the third time. Traditional activities include SGK Baltic Sea sailing gatherings, annual youth trips on the Schlei or at Edersee, and St Martin's regattas. In 2016 the club received the seagoing yacht Inspiration, a 39-foot Fabola Diva, which entered service in 2017. In 2022 the SGK celebrated its 50th anniversary and merged with Windsurfing Verein Nord Hessen Kassel e.V. More than 50 years after its founding, the original mission remains: making sailing accessible to all and promoting training and youth work.
