History

In 1972, 11 sailors decided to found a sailing community to enable regatta racing and inspire young people to take up sailing. The name 'Seglergemeinschaft' (sailing community) was deliberately chosen and remains the club's guiding principle more than 40 years later. Membership grew rapidly across all social groups. With dedication and enthusiasm, a small group quickly became an active sailing community. The path was sometimes arduous and could only be mastered with the commitment and practical help of many members; these members and their families remain the backbone of the club to this day. In 1974 the club joined the German Sailing Association. In 1978 regatta activities made a rescue and regatta safety boat necessary. The clubhouse was built in 1979. From 1982 to 1984 four wooden pontoons were constructed. A sanitary building followed in 1987. In 1997 the pontoons were rebuilt in galvanized steel. In May 1999 the SGD survived the Whitsun floods, when the pontoons sank in the high water and years of effort were at risk; the club got off lightly compared with other clubs on the lake. In 2000 the club was connected to the public power grid with cabling through the lake. The clubhouse was renovated and rebuilt in 2002. In 2004 sewer connection was added via a pumping station with pressure line. In 2005 the shoreline reinforcement at the pontoons was rebuilt. In 2008 the pontoons damaged by thick ice were renovated with new foundations and a modified rebuild to prevent future damage. In 2010 drainage was installed to better channel rainwater across the site. Today the SGD presents itself as a dynamic sailing club with very active youth work. The Königswinkeltrophy, youth week and youth cup, along with the club regatta, are recurring annual events with good participation. Most club facilities were built by members and integrated into the landscape. Land berths are occupied by boats such as Laser, Korsar, 470, Optis, FD, Tornado, Hobie Cat and Musto Performance Skiff. The club pontoon was renovated in 2008 after severe ice damage; all cabin boats and open keelboats find a secure berth here.
