Segelgemeinschaft Baldeneysee e.V.

Segelgemeinschaft Baldeneysee e.V. (SGB e.V.) is a non-profit sailing club founded in 1965 on Lake Baldeney in Essen with around 100 members. Originally established as a community of cruising sailors active on waters far beyond their home lake, the club remains strongly engaged on the Baldeneysee today. Members have access to a limited number of water and land berths as well as club-owned boats including Folkeboot, Varianta, Polyvalk and IF-Boot. Children and juniors gain their first experience on Optimists and can progress to 420er, 470er or ILCA 7. The clubhouse serves as a meeting place for training and celebrations; in summer the club organises the Ladies Cup and the EU Cup during Essen Sailing Week. All facilities are maintained collectively by members in an open, inclusive club culture without public catering.

History

Segelgemeinschaft Baldeneysee e.V. was founded in 1965 and traditionally developed as a community of cruising sailors whose members sail on almost all waters. At the same time, the club is active on its home Baldeneysee in Essen and today has around 100 members. SGB e.V. is a registered non-profit association at the Essen district court and a member of the German Sailing Association. The club describes itself as barrier-free, unprejudiced, welcoming to newcomers and socially inclusive, open to anyone who shares the same openness. Over the decades, the club evolved from a pure cruising community into a vibrant sailing club on the Baldeneysee offering water and land berths and club-owned boats to its members. The clubhouse is a central meeting point for diverse activities, interest groups, training and celebrations. All facilities are operated and maintained jointly by members; there is no public restaurant. In the summer months the club organises the Ladies Cup regatta for women only and the EU Cup as part of Essen Sailing Week, and takes part in regattas organised by other clubs on the lake. Juniors can start on Optimists and expand their sailing on classes such as 420er, 470er or ILCA 7, while adults can use club keelboats including Folkeboot, Varianta, Polyvalk and IF-Boot.
