History

The roots of Seglergemeinschaft Schwielochsee date back to 1928, when the Lausitzer Segelklub Cottbus (LSC) was founded at the Berliner Hof hotel in Cottbus; Willi Pöschke became the first chairman. In 1929 the boathouse at Jessern-Hoffnungsbay was built, followed in 1930 by the first wooden shelters (berths), a start tribune in 1932, and the first pier and rail slipway in 1936. Olympic dinghies first sailed on Lake Schwielochsee in 1938. After the Second World War, the first post-war regatta took place on 22 August 1948; on 2 September 1948 sailors from the LSC and Segler Club Schwielochsee merged to form Sportgemeinschaft Cottbus-Ost under Willi Pöschke again. The club grew strongly in the 1950s: in 1951 it had 66 members, by 1956 already 143, making it one of the largest clubs in the German Sailing Federation. State championship successes in O-Jolle and Pirat followed, the first Cottbuser O-Jollen Plate in 1980, and numerous GDR championship titles in Optimist, Cadet, O-Jolle, OK-Jolle and 420er. In 1963 the independent Sportgemeinschaft Schwielochsee was founded; Karl Müller became chairman in 1973, and by 1978 the club had more than 200 members. The conversion of the boat garage into the Jessern clubhouse was inaugurated in 1988 after 9,000 hours of members' own work. On 24 July 1990 the club was renamed Seglergemeinschaft Schwielochsee e.V.; Günter Hampel became chairman and the club joined the VBS and later the DSV and LSB Brandenburg. The 70th anniversary was celebrated in 1998, the International German O-Jolle Championship with 54 starters in 2001, the 80th anniversary in 2008, and the 90th anniversary on 9 June 2018 with a fleet cruise. From November 2019 the south pier was renovated; in 2020 pier, water and electricity connections and dinghy slipways in Goyatz and Jessern were completed. Today the SGS actively races and cruises on Lake Schwielochsee with almost 200 members.
