Seilforeningen 1928
Seilforeningen 1928 is a traditional sailing club in Stavanger’s eastern district with its own marina at Breivik by Dreyersholmene at the outer end of Gandsfjorden. The club offers pier facilities for about 55 sailing boats, a clubhouse, slipway with wash-down area, mast crane, workshop shed, and land space for winter storage and spring fitting-out. Racing is sailed in keelboats under NOR Rating rules; each year the club runs Arsgrunnen Shorthanded and Skudeseilasen around Kvitsøy, while members also join regional events such as Onsdagsseilasen. Since its founding in 1928 the association has been run by enthusiastic volunteers with no permanent staff and today has about 120 members.
History
Seilforeningen 1928 was founded in 1928 by sailing enthusiasts in Stavanger’s eastern districts. According to the anniversary book, the founders wanted to organise regattas to settle who was best on the fjord. In the early years boats were moored in Breivik bay in summer and hauled ashore in autumn. As boats grew larger and heavier, a year-round harbour was needed: a breakwater was built and later another further out. Today the marina lies at Breivik by Dreyersholmene at the outer Gandsfjorden with room for about 55 sailing boats, modern piers, its own clubhouse, slipway with wash area, mast crane and winter storage. The club is affiliated with Norges Idrettsforbund, Norges Seilforbund and Rogaland Seilkrets. Racing uses keelboats under NOR Rating rules. Each year the club organises the traditional races Arsgrunnen Shorthanded and Skudeseilasen around Kvitsøy; members also compete in regional events such as Onsdagsseilasen. Besides racing, most members use their boats for outdoor recreation in Ryfylke, along Vestlandet and Sørlandet, and on more demanding trips to Lofoten, Shetland, the Baltic or even the Mediterranean. The association is self-owned and independent, leases land from Stavanger municipality, and is run by the board between annual meetings held from January to March. Work continues through voluntary member effort without permanent employees. Today the club has about 120 members and around 50 berths.
