Sejlklubben Snekken Vordingborg

Sejlklubben Snekken is a traditional Danish sailing club based at Vordingborg Nordhavn on the southern tip of Zealand. Founded in 1923, the club has about 300 members of all ages and a new clubhouse in one of Denmark's most scenic waters. The programme ranges from a youth section and sailing school to OK dinghies and keelboat racing as well as Dragon Force 65 model sailing. Regular training, regattas and an active club life define the club; the centenary in 2023 was marked by the opening of the new clubhouse.

History

Sejlklubben Snekken was founded on 10 July 1923 at a meeting in Kirkeskovspavillonen in Vordingborg; chief engineer Madsen became the first chairman. The simple red-and-white club burgee was designed by painter Helge Jensen, a younger brother of merchant Fritjoff Jensen, who was for a time chairman and for many years the club's auditor. Through the club and its members, several boat classes were introduced in Denmark, including the Pirate dinghy, the OK dinghy and above all the Optimist. The first OK dinghy arrived in Vordingborg in 1957, where the idea originally arose; from there the class quickly spread to other Danish towns and clubs. A anniversary publication marked the 90th year. With a donation of 4 million kroner from the A.P. Møller and Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Møllers Fond til almene Formaal, a new clubhouse was built and completed for the centenary in 2023. Today the club has about 300 members and continues the tradition at Vordingborg Nordhavn with youth sailing, sailing school, an OK dinghy initiative and further activities.
