History

Segel-Club Hansa von 1898 e.V. in Lübeck was founded in 1898 by five Lübeck craftsmen: Arnold, Koch, Kröger, Nehlsen and Zimmermann. They were fascinated by sailing at a time when the sport was largely reserved for the wealthy and nobility. The Travemünde Week had attracted spectators since 1889, while ordinary citizens remained largely on the sidelines. The founding members built their boats themselves according to their financial means and craftsmanship – mostly small keelboats or converted lifeboats rigged for sailing. Sailing took place almost exclusively on the nearby Wakenitz. There was no boathouse at first; in summer the boats lay on moorings near the Wakenitz-Bellevue inn on Dorotheenstraße, and in winter the inn's veranda served as a boat storage hall. As membership and the number of boats grew, the club resolved in 1912 to build its own boathouse. From 1913 share certificates of 10 marks each were sold, with every member required to take three; the remaining 12,000 marks were advanced by individual members. The first regatta on Lake Ratzeburg was held in 1914, the boathouse was built in the same year and the mess hall and boathouse were inaugurated in September. The club joined the sailing association in 1923, a youth group was founded in 1927 and the boathouse was extended in 1929. In 1933 the club was banned and the boathouse confiscated; it was re-admitted under Nazi rule in 1938. In 1945 the British occupation forces seized the club again; the boathouse was returned in poor condition in 1948. In 1949 the club leased the weekend site at Schanzenberg on Lake Ratzeburg. Over the following decades numerous construction projects followed: the 75th anniversary in 1973, renovation of the boathouse in 1975, water supply at Schanzenberg in 1983, destruction and rebuilding of the bridge on Lake Ratzeburg by ice in 1986, electricity supply at Schanzenberg in 1987, a sanitary building in 1997, the centenary in 1998 with a keynote by Ernst Erdmann, a club house at Schanzenberg in 1999, rebuilding of the bridge in 2011, listing of the boathouse as a monument in Lübeck in 2022 and the 125th anniversary with a club chronicle in 2023. The SCH has long been organiser of major regattas, including German and international championships in classes such as Korsar, Shearwater, jollenkreuzer, Varianta, O-Jolle and Pirat. Today the club operates two sites – the Wakenitz boathouse with mess hall, boat storage halls and sailing school, and Schanzenberg on Lake Ratzeburg with berths, clubhouse, regatta office and youth shed – combining regatta sport, leisure sailing and active club life.
