1. Segelsportverein Geiseltalsee e.V.

The 1. Segelsportverein Geiseltalsee e.V. is a non-profit sailing club on Lake Geiseltal, the largest artificial lake in Germany, with club grounds in Braunsbedra to the left of the marina. Since its founding on 1 June 2015 and the start of sporting activities in 2016, the club offers regular training for children in Optimist dinghies, youth in 420s and adults on Ixylon dinghies. More than 50 members, including over 20 active children and young people, take part in regional and national regattas; in 2024 the club hosted the Saxony-Anhalt state youth championships. The programme includes squadron sails, cruising, training camps and an active club life on the home waters.

History

It all began with an old sailing dinghy that had waited for years in a barn for the flooding of Lake Geiseltal. When the water finally arrived and the lake invited its first outing, it quickly became clear that more was needed than just a harbour for small cruisers and commercial water sports. The idea of running sailing as a sport and on a non-profit basis, organising regattas and inspiring children, young people and adults for sailing led to the founding of the club on 1 June 2015. Sporting club activity began in the 2016 season. This was preceded by the construction of a club room and storage, the purchase of boats and the training of three instructors. In 2016, seven children in Optimists and two young people in 420 dinghies were already taught the basics of competitive sailing. The club took part in several regattas in the adult Ixylon class and successfully organised its first own regatta on Lake Geiseltal as a highlight. Membership has grown steadily since founding; the club now has more than 50 members, including over 20 active children and young people. In 2024 the club hosted the major youth regatta, the Open Saxony-Anhalt State Youth Championships, on the lake. In September 2024 a crowdfunding campaign via Saalesparkasse was launched for a club-owned jetty for dinghies; the required donation total was reached. As the club grows, so do its tasks, including the planned replacement of the old trainer boat with a modern rigid-hull inflatable boat.
