Segel-Club Unterelbe von 1929 e. V.
Segel-Club Unterelbe von 1929 e. V. is an active small sailing club with about 130 members in Hamburg-Blankenese on the Lower Elbe. The club has no club-owned facility; members can obtain berths at Hamburger Yachthafen and meet every second Thursday of the month at 8 p.m. at Polo Club Hamburg. Many members cruise with their own sailing or motor boats on the Elbe, North Sea and Baltic Sea, while others race in regattas. The youth section trains in Optimists and 420s at Hamburger Yachthafen and on the Elbe and takes part in events such as the Yachthafen Opti Cup and the traditional SCU Regatta. Camaraderie, cohesion and shared club life have shaped the club since its founding in 1929.
History
Segel-Club Unterelbe was founded on 30 October 1929 by Walter Anthes, Gustav Ettler and Ernst Wenthien at Erni Schulz's sailors' exchange in Oevelgönne. The aim was affordable cruising on the Lower Elbe; dues initially were 15 pfennigs per week. The club deliberately stayed small and fostered camaraderie among sailors. Before the war boats lay in Maakenwerder Harbour; after the war club life moved to Teufelsbrück Harbour. From June 1946 sailing on the Lower Elbe was allowed again. On 26 July 1950 the SCU was entered in Hamburg's register of associations. In 1957 and 1958 the club and BSC organised international Pirate regattas off Blankenese with sailors from several countries. Since 1957 the Teufelsbrück Regatta has been held, today known as the SCU Regatta for local boats under one-design and yardstick ratings on the Lower Elbe between Wedel and Stadersand. In 1963 the club newspaper Flaschenpost was created. In 1969 the first two Optimist dinghies were built; in 1980 the youth cutter Unterelbe followed and was sold in 1994. From 1977 the club played a key role in the Yachthafen festival. In 1990 the annual barbecue was introduced. In 1998 Arne Krogmann founded the Opti group, which brought new life to the club. Since 2008 Oliver Fude has been 1st Chairman. Today the club has about 130 members and combines cruising, racing and an active youth section.
