Segelclub Weiden
Segelclub Weiden (SCW) is a non-profit sailing club on Lake Neusiedl in Weiden am See in Burgenland, Austria. The club has its own harbour on Seestraße, a clubhouse, piers and a boathouse on the historic club grounds. The programme ranges from regattas such as the Family Cup and a youth weekend to the sociable Summer Sail Club and the end-of-season sail. The association promotes sailing for people of all ages and maintains an active community with a youth officer and boatmasters. The site dates back to 1961 as a UYCN branch; since the club was founded in 1983, SCW has been independent.
History
The club grounds in Weiden go back to the Weiden facility of Union Yacht Club Neusiedl (UYCN), opened in 1961. Designed by Dipl.-Ing. Kurt Jirasko under the site supervision of Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Paul Petrovich, it was opened in May 1961 by UYCN president Dr. Bousek and mayor Denk. The first cabins had neither electricity, water nor sewage; an artesian well followed in 1963 and the first power connection in 1965. In the following years a harbour with piers was built; in 1966 Ferdinand Pirbaumer donated a club mast. In 1983 the Weiden members amicably separated from UYCN after paying 200,000 schillings and founded Segelclub Weiden (SCW) in July 1983, which was not prohibited by the association authority on 27 September 1983. Sewage connection followed in 1984; new duplex houses were built in 1991. In 1994 a storm caused major damage including a fallen club mast; in 1996 floodwater inundated the boathouse. Ing. Gerhard Jettmar, long-time officer and 17 years chairman of SCW, stepped down in 2000 and documented the history of the site until 2011. Today SCW as a non-profit association continues to foster sailing on Lake Neusiedl.
