Segel Club Baltic e.V.
Segel Club Baltic e.V. (SCB) is one of Germany's oldest sailing clubs and has been based in Kiel since 1950. The clubhouse on piles in the Olympia harbour at Düsternbrook, with its rigging and youth rooms, is the centre of club life on the Kiel Fjord. With more than 400 members, around one fifth of them in the youth section, the club has been sailing on the Baltic Sea and beyond for over 140 years. An extensive fleet of club boats from Optimists via ILCA and RS Quest to the sporty J/80 supports training, free sailing and regattas. Berths in Düsternbrook, Stickenhörn and Schilksee plus the club's own winter storage in Wellingdorf complete the infrastructure. In 2024 the German Sailing Association recognised the SCB for outstanding training work; cooperations with Kiel schools and events such as opening and closing of the season, Förde Cup and Ærø-Rund shape the annual programme.
History
Segel Club Baltic was founded on 2 September 1882 in Königsberg, East Prussia, initiated by manufacturer Louis Halfter and 17 other sailors. As early as 1899 the club acquired a floating clubhouse from a decommissioned pram of the state amber works, moored in the club harbour at Fort Friedrichsburg. As the club grew and sailing on the Pregel became more difficult, the sailing clubs Rhe and Baltic leased land at the Beek estuary in Contienen from 1914 and built berths, boat sheds and clubhouses; the move with numerous yachts took place in 1914. After the Second World War, five Baltic members met in Kiel in January 1950 at the initiative of Georg Kaul. On the club's 68th founding day, 2 September 1950, 26 members in the Seeburg's round room resolved to continue the club in Kiel. Since 1950 the SCB has been based in Kiel with berths in the sports harbours Düsternbrook, Stickenhörn and Schilksee. In the old Olympia harbour at Düsternbrook the club owns its clubhouse on piles in the harbour basin with rigging and youth rooms. On the east bank of the Kiel Fjord at Wellingdorf the SCB operates its own winter storage. The club is a founding shareholder of Sporthafen Kiel GmbH. In 2007 the SCB celebrated its 125th anniversary. Cooperations with Kiel schools have existed for almost 60 years. In 2024 Segel Club Baltic e.V. was one of 32 clubs nationwide recognised by the German Sailing Association for particularly successful training work. The youth section has received several awards, including the Sailing Kids prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Sailing Association and funding from the Peter Petersen Foundation for building an Optimist regatta group.
