Segelclub Mattsee
Segelclub Mattsee (SCM) has been based on Lake Mattsee in Salzburg since 1950 and ranks among Austria's largest and most successful sailing clubs. The club grounds in Weyerbucht offer modern floating piers, a clubhouse directly on the water, a boat crane up to 3 tonnes, a boathouse, workshop and sanitary and changing facilities. The club traditionally emphasises competitive sailing – including Optimist, ILCA, 29er, Korsar and J/70 – and was vice-champion of the Austrian Sailing Bundesliga in 2024. An active youth section supports children from around age six with weekly training, club boats, regatta coaching and a youth week during the summer holidays. Regular evening regattas, club championships and the Mattsee Seemeisterschaft shape club life on the lake.
History
Segelclub Mattsee has existed since 1950 and has grown into one of the largest sailing clubs in the country. In the years after the Second World War, enthusiasts set out to fulfil their dream of sailing; boatbuilder Hermann Steiner sen. provided his lateen-rigged boats for the first regattas. In 1949 the first perpetual trophy was donated, a preparatory committee drafted statutes, and on 14 January 1950 the founding celebration took place at Gasthof zur Post – Karl Habenberger became the first chairman. In the first club year a pier was built in front of the music pavilion; in 1951 the first lake festival drew over 5,000 visitors. In 1952 the club joined the Austrian Sailing Federation. Plans for a clubhouse followed in 1955, built in 1956/57 at the present site. In 1958 SCM hosted the Austrian national championship in the 10 m² racing class for the first time; Hofrat Dr. Gustav Reuter became the first president. In 1960 Matthias Gschaider brought the first Korsar and Hans Furthner the first Flying Dutchman to the club; the boathouse in Weyerbucht was completed in 1961. Ferdinand Haselberger took over as chairman in 1967, and slipway and harbour facilities were finished in 1969. After lengthy planning, the new clubhouse opened in 1978; the crane in Weyerbucht from 1979 allowed boats up to 2 tonnes. The pier was extended in 1984, Guido Elhaf led the club from 1988 to 2000, followed by Walter Stepan. In 2000 SCM hosted six Austrian national and class championships for its 50th anniversary. In 2013 the entire pier system was replaced by modern floating piers and the crane upgraded to 3 tonnes; a new boat shed with workshop and sanitary facilities was built in 2016. SCM members have achieved world titles in offshore sailing, European championships, numerous national titles and international regatta successes; the club regularly organises major events and was Austrian Bundesliga champion in 2020 and vice-champion in 2024. Youth work with regular coaching and support for young sailors remains a special focus.
