History

Segel-Club Salzgitter e.V. was founded in 1964. Four years later the founding members began building the clubhouse and jetties on Lake Salzgittersee. The roughly 4,000 square metre grounds lie at the harbour and are regarded as the first address among the five clubs based there. Lake Salzgittersee originated from 1960 as a gravel pit lake and was completed in 1975 at the planned size of 75 hectares of water. Until the 1980s only a few boat classes were admitted; club regattas then often fielded up to ten boats in a single class. Over time the club opened up and now runs regattas under yardstick scoring so different classes can race together. For decades Michael Klügel has competed successfully across Europe in the Finn Dinghy and OK dinghy. In the last decade the Steenbuck brothers raced Laser in the DSV squad; Nadja Kopp continues international success in the youth national team and at world championships in the Europe class. Club juniors qualified via the German Youth Sailing League on the J/70 for the 2nd German Sailing Bundesliga for the first time. Today the club has about 200 to 220 members, is affiliated to the DSV, the Lower Saxony Sailing Association, the South Lower Saxony racing community and the Salzgitter district sports federation, and offers a modern facility with 56 water and 36 land berths.
