Segelclub St. Moritz
Founded in 1941, the Sailing Club St. Moritz is a Swiss sailing club on Lake St. Moritz and Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadin. Thanks to the legendary Maloja wind, the venue ranks among Europe's best-known sailing and windsurfing locations. The club organises national, European and world championships, offers sailing courses for all levels, an active youth section, offshore activities, and yacht trips as well as boat hire.
History
The Upper Engadin was discovered in 1939 as an alternative regatta venue for the Zurich Yacht Club and, thanks to the legendary Maloja wind, developed into one of Europe's most sought-after sailing and surfing areas. The Sailing Club St. Moritz was founded in 1941 and has organised numerous class, Swiss, European and world championships on Lake St. Moritz and Lake Silvaplana for dinghies, yachts and catamarans. Since the club's early days, O-Jollen have enjoyed guest rights on Lake St. Moritz; modern skiff classes also use the compact venue with its short tacks for demanding competitions. The home lake, only 1,600 metres long and 600 metres wide, demands tactical skill, technical ability and above-average fitness from sailors, but offers the advantage that the entire regatta can be watched from shore. During the sailing season from early June to the end of September, about 20 mooring buoys and around 60 dry berths are available at the jetty; launching is via a ramp or by mobile crane, which can also launch smaller yachts. Over the decades the club has hosted major events including the St. Moritz Match Race with America's Cup teams, international Optimist, Finn and Laser championships, Longtze Cups, blu26 and esse750 regattas, and the Sailing Champions League final. In 2016 the club celebrated its 75th anniversary with a regatta, ceremony and open day. Lake Silvaplana hosts large events especially in the second half of August with fleets of up to 120 boats. Beyond regatta sailing, SCStM offers sailing courses with its own instructors, an active offshore division and crews competing worldwide. The clubhouse restaurant has been operated by tenants under various names – most recently Segelhaus and formerly Pier 34; from 2025 a major renovation of the restaurant and boatyard is under way with total funding of around CHF 2.76 million supported by the municipality, canton, members and sponsors. Today the club promotes sailing in the Engadin, youth and regatta sailing with qualified training, and camaraderie among members of all generations.
