Segelclub oberer Walensee
A small, uncomplicated sailing club on the upper Lake Walen with around 100 members, a dry storage area in Mols for light boats, club boats and an attractive regatta programme in cooperation with SMCGW.
History
1973: With hardly any berth space for dinghies, let alone yachts, several sailing pioneers joined together in 1973 to form the Segelclub oberer Walensee after the dinghy area was relocated from today's Walenstadt lido to the protective embankment beside the harbour. Shortly afterwards, the opportunity arose to lease a meadow plot from the municipality of Mols, and a launching ramp was built immediately through voluntary work. The club developed very rapidly as this innovation increased its appeal, and today it has more than a hundred members. 1975: Admission to the USY (Union of Swiss Yacht Clubs), today SWISS Sailing; active members, especially among regatta sailors, pushed until regattas for classes such as 470, Tornado, Hobie Cat and others were established on the lake. These efforts gave rise to the traditional Lake Walen regattas of SCoW and the cat and dinghy weekends. The Laser Swiss Championship was held at the regatta area in Walenstadt harbour. 1983: Tornado Swiss Championship from 11 to 15 May at Walenstadt harbour and a surfing regatta for the emerging group of surfers. 1984: Closer cooperation between the two Lake Walen clubs SMCGW and SCoW with a trial introduction of an annual championship. 1985: First edition of the joint yearbook; since 1985 the club has worked closely with SMCGW. 1987: 470 Swiss Championship and Dart class championship at Walenstadt harbour. 1991: Dyas Swiss Championship at Unterterzen harbour. 1996: H-Boot Swiss Championship from 31 July to 4 August at Trudel regatta area, boatyard; launch of the internet site at http://www.swiss-sport.ch/sailing/scow. 1997: New honorary members Erich Moser, Ruedi Moser and Walter Blättler. 1999: Flooding in the second half of May with the container in Mols half submerged; storm Lothar on 26 December. 2001: Fireball/Tempest Swiss Championship. 2003: Joint 49er Swiss Championship organised by SMCGW, SC Stäfa and SCoW. 2005: Erich and Ruedi Moser become Fireball world champions 2006 in Canada and are named sailors of the year by SWISS Sailing; the club offers boys and girls aged 8 to 12 a taster course in sailing. 2007: First MUSTO Skiff Challenge held in tribute to the six permanent and two guest Musto skiffs that had become the largest dinghy class on the lake.
