Segler-Club Oberspree e.V.
Segler-Club Oberspree e.V. (SCO) is a long-established sailing club on the Lower Havel in Kladow, Berlin, directly opposite Peacock Island at kilometre 13. Founded in 1906 as a non-profit association with around 250 members, the club has a 4,000 square metre site with a well-equipped marina, steamer pier, modern clubhouse and terrace overlooking Lake Wannsee. Sailing classes include Optimist, ILCA, Pirat, Europe, Folkeboat and H-Boat; its nationally recognised youth programme covers Opti groups from age seven, Laser training and boating licence courses. Eight to ten club races per season, the Havelrund yardstick regatta and the Willi Möllmer memorial trophy shape competitive sailing, complemented by cruising and participation in Wannsee Thursday regattas. Visiting berth holders are welcome; the club works with Berlin schools and offers training for inland and sea boating licences.
History
Segler-Club Oberspree e.V. was founded on 24 June 1906 at the restaurant "Zu den drei Linden" in Grünau, although the club is now based on the Lower Havel in Berlin-Kladow – a typical consequence of Berlin's post-war history. In 1912 the SCO leased Großer Rohrwall island on the Dahme and became a founding member of the Deutscher Segler-Bund, later absorbed into the German Sailing Association; Robert Höfer served as federal chairman for ten years. After the war the island passed to GDR control, prompting members in West Berlin to re-establish Segler-Club Oberspree e.V. in 1954. In 1966 a plot in Berlin-Kladow was leased and a clubhouse built by members' own labour was completed a few years later; additional land was leased and later purchased, giving the club 4,000 square metres today. The club is a member of the Berlin Sailing Association within the DSV, registered in Charlottenburg and recognised as a non-profit organisation. Up to 25 kilometres can be sailed without lowering the mast from Spandau via Lake Wannsee and the Lower Havel to Krampnitz. The clubhouse was rebuilt from 2015 to 2019: construction began in October 2017, the foundation stone was laid in February 2018, the topping-out ceremony in June 2018 and the inauguration in March 2019 after almost 18 months. The SCO hosts the annual Willi Möllmer memorial trophy and Havelrund yardstick regatta, runs eight to ten internal club races and competes at German youth championships and international regattas.
