Schweriner Segler-Verein von 1894 e.V. is the oldest sailing club in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and, with 420 members, one of the largest in the region. Its home waters are Lake Schwerin; the club grounds lie on the Marstall peninsula right next to Schwerin Castle. Facilities include jetties and berths, a boat house, the Seglerheim clubhouse with club rooms and a public restaurant, plus a strong youth section with training groups in Optimist, ILCA, 420, 29er and 49er. The club covers recreational and competitive sailing, hosts local to international regattas, and also offers inclusive sailing, cruising, cutter sailing and an Olympia Team 2028. A distinctive feature is the historic 19th-century setting and the certified club harbour with guest berths.
History
Schweriner Segler-Verein von 1894 e.V. dates back to 1894 and is the oldest sailing club in the state capital Schwerin. After the merger of the clubs SSV and ESV “Turbine” based at Schwanenhorst into Schweriner Segler-Verein von 1894 e.V., a new board was elected in April 1995; in that period of renewal the club magazine “Verklicker” was launched in 1996 and has appeared twice a year ever since. In 1999 the new boat house was completed, and in the same year the club’s Skipper Choir was founded. In the 1990s a naval cutter ZK 10 also found a home at the club; club crews later became German champions in cutter sailing. In autumn 2005 the club harbour received three Blue Stars from the German Tourism Association as the first German club harbour and is also certified as a waterway rest stop (Gelbe Welle). Today the club has around 420 members, runs an award-winning youth section, organises traditional regattas such as the wooden boat regatta, cruiser distance race and Ice Saints regatta, and supports young sailors towards international competition with the SSV Olympia Team 2028. The landmark remains the Seglerheim on the Marstall peninsula on Lake Schwerin’s inner basin, next to Schwerin Castle.
