Segelclub Schwäbisch Gmünd e.V.

Segelclub Schwäbisch Gmünd e.V. is a sailing club founded in 1982 and based in Schwäbisch Gmünd, with around 40 members. Although the club is not located on a lake, Lake Constance is the main sailing area for season opening and closing trips as well as skipper training on chartered yachts. Members do not need their own boat; shared charter sailing trips worldwide and occasional houseboat tours on inland waterways are central. Members meet monthly on the third Thursday at 7 p.m. for a regulars' table. A training initiative supports the Lake Constance skipper's licence, the coastal leisure craft licence, radio certificates and SKS training, complemented by cooperation with Sportbootschule Schaal locally.

History

Segelclub Schwäbisch Gmünd e.V. was founded on 2 April 1982; the first chairman was Manfred Bareis. In the following decades the chairmanship changed several times: Manfred Kunz first took office in 1987 and shaped the club for a total of 15 years as first chairman, with interruptions. Other chairmen included Kurt-Georg Flagmeyer, Thomas Wagner, Gunter Beck and Wolfgang Schubarth. Since 2007 the club has also been present online; the website accompanied the club for many years. In February 2018 Manfred Kunz was farewelled after his long term of office and Rudolf B. Schäfer was elected as the new first chairman; the website relaunched with a new look and logo. Further modernisations of the website followed in October 2018 and September 2019; in 2019 the club organised its first offshore charter trip to Greece. In June 2020 the board cancelled all memberships in overarching federations in order to use funds more strongly for coaches and member training. Since then the club has regularly organised season opening and closing sailing on Lake Constance, skipper training and international charter trips including to Greece, Croatia, Sardinia and Italy. Manfred Kunz, one of the first members and long-time chairman, died on 8 March 2024; he had also prepared students for the Lake Constance skipper's licence at the adult education centre in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Today the club has around 40 members and combines club life in the East Württemberg region with sailing mainly on Lake Constance and on offshore trips.
