Segel Club Cham
Segel Club Cham is an active sailing club on Lake Zug in Cham with a clubhouse and piers at Cham harbour. As a Swiss Sailing member it offers junior training on Optimist, Laser and 420 as well as club boats including J/70 and 29er for members and youth. Regular Friday training in season, winter indoor sessions and participation in Regio Cups and Youth Cups shape the junior programme. Regattas such as the Chomer Bär and the Lake Zug Cup, Sail & Dine evenings and the season opening sail belong to club life. Founded in 1947 from the Seglergilde Zugersee, the club has around 250 members and a long tradition on Lake Zug.
History
The roots of Segel Club Cham go back to autumn 1942, when fifteen Lake Zug sailors founded the Seglergilde Zugersee in Zug with its seat in Cham. In 1943 the guild split into Zug and Cham local groups; on 22 March 1947 the independent Segel Club Cham was founded alongside Yacht Club Zug. Willi Baumgartner (Krax) became the first president. Still in 1947 the club joined USY/SSV and took part in Swiss championships with H-dinghies. In 1950 the first pier was built by members; in 1955 piers were extended and a changing hut added, together with the first plastic boats (O-dinghy and club boat Bobbeli). In 1956 the von Schulthess family permitted a mooring field. In 1960 the first junior group started; that year Louis Schiess competed in the Finn at the Rome Olympics and finished 26th. Later decades brought Föhn storms, legendary boat christenings, the club magazine Flaschenpost and sporting successes including Swiss titles and the 1996 European Championship in the 505 class. In 1997 the club celebrated its 50th anniversary; in 2002 the Barrique Cup began. Optimist teams became Swiss team champions in 1998 and 2018. Today the SCC is a Cham sports club with around 250 members, a clubhouse, piers and a fleet of Optimists, ILCA, 29er, RS600 and J/70.
