History

Segelclub Albertus Magnus Schule (SC AMS) originated from a sailing enrichment group at Albertus Magnus School in Vienna. In 1986 the club began its shared journey with the aim of creating a place where people can share their passion for sailing. In 2026 the club celebrates its 40th anniversary. Dr Michael Schwamberger (1935–2022) was a central pioneer of youth sailing in Austria; his life's work shaped youth sailing and he is remembered as the club's honorary president. SC AMS developed at the New Danube North sailing area near Strebersdorf into one of Vienna's leading sailing clubs and was named Austria's most sporting sailing club eight times. The New Danube North sailing centre is operated as a GmbH together with Segel Club ASKÖ Floridsdorf (SAF), the AVSA seafaring school and a restaurant. Over decades the club built a broad youth and regatta programme including the Vienna Optimist Centre, summer sailing, Saturday sailing and numerous focus regattas. Youth sailors from the club achieved success at world and European championships. Even after flood damage in autumn 2024, the club continues to develop its pontoon facilities and training offers, including offshore sailing and inclusive sailing.
