History

Segelclub Westfalen e.V. has been active since 1955 and is one of the oldest sailing clubs on Lake Haltern. In 2025 the club celebrated its 70th anniversary. On the northern shore of the Haltern reservoir, a drinking water reservoir where leisure activities are permitted in the northern basin, are the harbour facilities shared by six sailing clubs – the SCW is one of them. The club is a member of the German Sailing Association (DSV, No. NW055) and the North Rhine-Westphalia Sailing Association (SVNRW). With around 180 members of all ages, the SCW is family-oriented and welcomes sailors who enjoy sailing – whether leisurely, in regatta mode or for sailing training. The club has three club boats (Varianta, Efsix, Dyas) used for sailing training, inclusion sailing and for members without their own boat. An important focus is cooperation with Lebenshilfe for inclusion sailing, enabling people with disabilities and their companions to experience sailing days on the lake. The youth section teaches children and young people sailing in Optimists and leads to the youth sailing certificate; training is led by a dedicated youth team. The SCW organises and participates in numerous regattas on the lake – around 15 regattas take place annually. Traditional events such as the opening and closing of the season of the Haltern Sailing Community shape the seasonal rhythm. Activities such as Sunday sailing, Wednesday sailing, the SCW Cup as a generational cup and Wednesday get-togethers in winter strengthen club community. The SCW is present in the public eye through press reports, image films and participation in events such as SAIL Amsterdam.
