Segelclub Jülich
Segelclub Jülich e.V. (SCJ) was founded in 1968 and has around 340 members from Jülich, Düren, Cologne, Aachen and the Eifel region. On Lake Rursee at Woffelsbach, near Eifel National Park, the club operates a roughly 7,000 square metre site with a clubhouse, pontoon, slipway and car park. Members sail free of charge on club-owned boats ranging from Optimist and Pirat dinghies to Kielzugvogel, Polyvalk, BM-Jolle and ILCA 7. The programme includes regatta, cruising and passage sailing, regular youth and adult training, summer sailing camps and two to three club regattas per season. Since 1978, the Kehraus regatta with summer festival has been the sporting highlight on Lake Rursee, complemented by training from youth sailing certificate to sport coastal skipper licence.
History
The roots of Segelclub Jülich e.V. date back to 1964, when seven sailing enthusiasts met at the Gasthof Zum Einhorn in Jülich and founded a sailing section within the sports association of Forschungszentrum Jülich. The traditional Veere trip on the Veerse Meer in Holland began as early as 1965 and continues to this day. In 1966 the sailing section left the sports association, joined the German Sailing Association in 1967 and was registered as Segelclub Jülich e.V. on 9 February 1968. The club burgee in Jülich's black and gold colours symbolises the link with Jülich and the former research centre. In September 1967 the first self-built Flying Junior was launched. For the 1968 season the young club rented moorings for the first time at Rosslag marina near Roermond. Membership grew from 21 to 51 and then to 102. Hermann Petri became chairman in 1969, followed by Heinz Barthels, who held the office for 24 years. Hans-Jürgen Dännart has led the club since 1997. Since 1978 the Kehraus regatta has closed each season; since 1998 the age (H) open ranking regatta has been held alongside it. Over the following decades the club grew into one of the largest sailing events on Lake Rursee, regularly attracting more than 60 boats and over 130 sailors. A new pontoon was inaugurated in 2010. The youth section became the driving force of the club with its own boats, summer camps and successful regatta appearances across Germany and abroad. The SCJ celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008. In 2024 the board adopted a protection concept for children and young people. Today the club uses its spacious site at Wildenhof in Woffelsbach on Lake Rursee with clubhouse, pontoon, slipway and a diverse club boat fleet for recreational and regatta sailing.
