Segelclub „Haltern am See“ e.V.
Segelclub Haltern am See e.V. (SCH) was founded in 1950 and is the oldest sailing club on Lake Haltern north of the Ruhr area, between the Hohe Mark nature park and the Haard region. On the wind-sheltered reservoir with around 310 hectares of water, members sail successfully in classes such as Pirat, Optimist, Dyas, Varianta and Yngling, and use a club boat fleet including Kielzugvogel, Yngling, Optimist, Laser, Europe and Pirat. As the first club on the lake, SCH offers flat-rate use of club boats via an online booking portal and free inland boating licence (SBF Binnen) training for members. Racing sailors, cruising sailors and family crews enjoy an active club life with internal ranking races, inter-club regattas such as the Haltern Classic, and a strong youth programme with an Optimist group at the pontoon and in the clubhouse.
History
In May 1950, Segel-Club Haltern am See e.V. was founded in the Mühlbachtal as the first sailing club on the lake. Josef Kock, the club's first chairman in every sense, registered the club with the German Sailing Association on 18 June 1950 with 22 members. The first statutes already contained the club's goals still valid today: promoting sailing, organising and taking part in regattas, and training members. In 1966 SCH joined two other local clubs to form Seglergemeinschaft Haltern (SGH); three more clubs joined by 1975. The 1983 SGH rules aimed to represent the clubs' interests towards authorities, associations and Gelsenwasser AG; later, organising open regattas was added. From 1977 to 2010 the traditional mayor's regatta was sailed, with mayors from district towns competing in Varianta boats. The club became home to many successful racing sailors in Pirat, Optimist, Dyas and Varianta, while also welcoming cruising, weekend and after-work sailors and family crews. SCH was the first club on Lake Haltern to introduce a flat rate for club boats and an online booking portal. The sailing area, Lake Haltern reservoir, was built between 1927 and 1930, covers about 310 hectares and supplies drinking water; Gelsenwasser AG is the operator. The club has a clubhouse, pontoons, a fleet of ten boat types and an electric support boat approved for youth training and regattas. Today SCH organises inter-club regattas such as the Haltern Classic for Pirat dinghies and the club championship with partner clubs, and runs an internal ranking over eight races per season.
