Segelclub Kühlungsborn e.V.
Segelclub Kühlungsborn e.V. is a traditional sailing club in Kühlungsborn West, directly beside the art gallery on the Baltic Sea. Since its founding as the sailing section in 1959 and its re-establishment in 1991, the club promotes sailing for beginners and advanced sailors with a strong focus on youth development. The boats, especially catamarans, are moored on the beach in a designated area; for Optimist training the club uses the harbour of Kühlungsborn Ost. The programme includes regular dinghy and catamaran training during the season as well as winter fitness sessions at the sports hall in Kühlungsborn West. The club has a clubhouse renovated in 2025 with a multi-purpose area and works closely with the local DLRG branch in Kühlungsborn.
History
Segelclub Kühlungsborn was founded in 1959 as the sailing section of Sportgemeinschaft Sturmvogel. After building Germany's first catamaran in 1962 and the club building in 1963 with its extension in 1969, the club became a training centre for youth sailing in the Bad Doberan district during the 1970s. Segelclub Kühlungsborn e.V. was re-founded in its current form in 1991. Due to changing requirements, the club building was remodelled in 1992/93. Youth sailing remained central, with training on Optimist, OK-Jolle, Cadet, 420er and Europe dinghies. In 2000 the sections catamaran sailing, surfing and offshore sailing (yacht sailing) were established and continuously expanded. From 2006 to 2019 the club hosted numerous regional, national and international regattas in classes including Contender, Drachen, Hobie 16, J/24 and Techno 293 (windsurfing). The club has always aimed to make sailing accessible to all interested people. Today catamarans launch from the beach in Kühlungsborn West, while the harbour is used mainly for Optimist training. Advanced juniors sail on single-handed skiffs (Open Skiff). In 2025 the clubhouse was renovated and partly converted into a multi-purpose area shared with other local sports clubs such as DLRG Kühlungsborn, creating synergies on land and on the water.
