Segelclub Breitenthal e.V.

Segelclub Breitenthal e.V. in the district of Günzburg was founded in September 1973 in the Günz valley and sails on Lake Oberrieder Weiher, a gravel-pit lake covering around 43 hectares with excellent water quality. With about 250 members, 40 water and 40 land berths, and a new clubhouse directly on the shore, the club is the largest sailing club in the surrounding area. Children and young people learn to sail on the club's own Optimists and Lasers; throughout the year, competitive sailors of all boat types take part in numerous regattas, including the Allgäu Optiliga and the Seggerling ranking regatta. The club grounds offer moorings and a covered terrace as well as a lawn, playground, barbecue area, and in winter curling on the frozen lake – the annual summer festival on the lake is a highlight of club life.

History

Segelclub Breitenthal e.V. was founded in September 1973 in the Günz valley on Lake Oberrieder Weiher. The gravel-pit lake covers around 43 hectares with an average depth of about 2.5 metres; it is fed by groundwater and has very good water quality. In the decades after its founding, the club developed into the largest sailing club in the area with 40 water and 40 land berths and a newly built clubhouse directly on the lake with a covered terrace. For its 50th anniversary, the traditional opening of the season took place on 1 April 2023. The club hosts internal regattas, the Nikolaus Regatta, an autumn regatta with international participation, and Allgäu Optiliga races; the Seggerling ranking regatta has become one of the best-attended regattas of this class in Germany. At the 2026 annual general meeting, chairman Thomas Böttinger highlighted the basic sailing course, the children's holiday programme with the municipality of Kettershausen, regional regattas, and the extension of the lease agreement as a basis for the club's future. Long-serving members were honoured for 25 to 45 years of membership; Monika and Alfons Müller, Marianne and Manfred Kramer, and Bärbel and Hans-Jürgen Kropp were appointed honorary members. The club aims to promote sailing through training, regattas and youth work, and warmly welcomes new members to its grounds on Lake Oberrieder Weiher.
