Savonlinnan Pursiseura ry

History

Savonlinnan Pursiseura was founded on 10 September 1908 at the Savonlinna tourist hotel with 12 founding members under Maisteri Artur Grönroos; the first commodore was Aleks Sikio. By the following spring the club had 166 members and was initially named Saimaan Purjehdusseura. Activity was suspended in spring 1924. In October 1961 the club was revived by the Savon Saukkojen scout group and renamed Savonlinnan Pursiseura; Reino Väänänen became commodore in 1962. In the 1960s the club began building light boats such as Vikla, Salama and Optimist; the island base Kankainen was developed from 1965 with first saunas in 1966. By the late 1960s the club had 185 members and 25 juniors; the first Saimaan Regatta was sailed at the end of the decade. In the 1970s Optimist youth sailing flourished with around 87 juniors, annual boat inspections from 1973 and the first Olavin Regatta in 1979. The 1980s saw growth from 182 to 317 members, the urban base Rajalahti in 1980, national successes including Jukka-Pekka Aho's Finnish championship in 1983 and Vesa Kukkonen's European gold in 1986, and the first Oopperaregatta in 1987. In the 1990s a large sauna and a 30-metre pontoon pier were built in Kankainen, regular Saimaa squadron cruises began and the Primus Nauticator award was introduced. Since 2006 Laitaatsilta/Oskarinniemi has been the home harbour; membership exceeded 300 in 2008. In the 21st century the club organises the Oopperaregatta as the largest Saimaa Ranking event, celebrates Saimaa Ranking successes and was named Finnish Sailing Club of the Year 2024 by Suomen Purjehdus ja Veneily.
